Evaluate the usefulness of David Eastons model of the political system Essay - 1

Evaluate the usefulness of David Eastons model of the political system for comparative political analysis. Use at least one democratic and one authoritarian regime as examples - Essay Example Through these interactions, the society can authoritatively allocate values (Easton, Gunnell & Stein 1995). In short, it is a systematic way used to determine the allocation or power and authority in the society. The term system reflects brings together various elements as captured by Easton. These elements include the purpose of the system. In this case, the main objective of a political system should be to convert inputs, which exist in the form of demands from supporters and converting them into decisions. Secondly, a political system should consist of elements (Barrington 2012). These elements consist of decisions, demands, implementations, strategies among others. Thirdly, it is necessary to have boundaries that define the political system. These boundaries play a critical role when it comes to determining what belongs to the system of not (Almond 1988). Lastly, the environment is a major player in a political system. In this case, actions considered to be lacking in political will, exist in the environment. Easton introduces three different levels in a political system. These levels include the state, the regime, and the government. According to the political systems theory, the state represents an institution that bears that responsibility to govern. It is a legitimate entity that exists permanently. A regime represents fundamental rules and principles (Frohock 1974). It is an organization of power in a specific government. Thirdly, the government refers to a collection of existing offices that exist in a political system. These offices give the office holders room to act on behalf of the people in realizing their objectives. Easton’s political system represents a systematic approach when it comes to politics and governance. In essence, it makes it possible to analyze political systems and come up with solutions to some of the challenges facing the society. Easton developed a systematic process of transforming input into output. Through

Statement of purpose 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Statement of purpose 3 - Essay Example However, these challenges are not to deter me from continuing with the quest I have vowed to purposefully accomplish in my chosen career which is to teach a foreign language, specifically English to my fellow-Kuwaiti people to advance their own dreams. Teaching has always been a part of me coming from a family of teachers with my father being a Mathematics teacher in intermediate school and my mother, a Kindergarten teacher. Looking up to my parents’ examples, I value the affects one could make in teaching like one anonymous writer said, ‘A good teacher is like a candle- it consumes itself to light the way for others’. My parents and other teachers helped in the molding of my young mind into the person that I am now, a passionate mind voracious to knowledge, ready to be consumed for the process of teaching to continue in my own small way. Teachers allowed themselves to be consumed and were able to bear fruit, building lives that are stable and goal-focused. These, I have seen in my parents, teachers and my personal making as my professors mentioned in their recommendation letters on my behalf describing me as hard-working and a team-player. In addition, they look at me as a student of high moral principles who also displayed a good level of oral and written English communication skills. ... This is the very reason why I like to enroll in the Masters degree in the United Kingdom so I would be exposed to native speakers as well as teachers who have been well-trained to train foreign educators like me. Looking at the programs offered by the University of Brighton, I am drawn to enroll in this prestigious school as it perfectly fits the needs I have right now. I like the idea of being educated in the issues related to English language teaching, exploring in-depth aspects of English and the theory and practice of language teaching in relation to the international context which the school program offers. Its analytical and investigative skills development program also poses a great challenge and excitement to me because I am well aware that research is one difficult task nevertheless, it also is a very educational endeavor that I believe would enhance my analytical abilities. The course structure caught my attention and interest because I know that with the program, my skills would be all the more sharpened as I read quality materials with the guidance of efficient professors as well as with the help of diverse students whom I could learn from. Studying in such a respected university with tried and tested programs would be to me an honor and a privilege because I know that the University of Brighton would not only be recognized because of its location but more so with the quality of education she offers. Being a current employee of the Ministry of Education in Kuwait as an English teacher in intermediate school who just started by the last quarter of last year, I have seen my need for a higher education which I would like to take in the United Kingdom for reasons earlier mentioned. I

Stock Market Research Paper Essay Example for Free

Stock Market Research Paper Essay Brooke Boll Boll 1 Ms. Huneke English 2A January 24th 2010 America’s All Time Low The United States of America has always been known as a very strong, free, wealthy country. People all over the world immigrated to the U. s for many reasons one of them being the freedom and the opportunity to choose their own living. After World War I the United States of America went through a wide economic expansion because of the new technology. The stock market benefited greatly to all this money the country was making. Many people began putting money into stocks to make a fast killing. Most of these people never even thought that what was about to happen was even possible. The stock market will always go up is what everyone thought and never realized that it would soon come crumbling down. In September of 1929 the stock market hit an all time low which resulted in one of history’s greatest stock market disasters (Quinn). As everyone knows what goes up must come down there for in October of 1929 the market began to crash. â€Å"Even though most people did not own stocks the effects of the stock market crash were not limited to stockholders†(ABC-CLIO). The stock market crash affected the whole entire country. This down fall was one of the major factors that caused the great depression. â€Å"After ten years of soaring values, Wall street Boll 2 commodities plunged to frighteningly low depths on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929. The stock market collapsed in a frenzy of selling in which a record 16 million shares were dumped† (Wukovits, 19). The millions of shares in the stock market being cut created financial issues for everyone. Very rich business men lost money in their stock and started to raise prices and cut salaries. Men and women all over the country lost their jobs and or saw their salary slashed. The unemployment percent skyrocketed and almost seven hundred banks were closed in the year of 1929, and eighty-five thousand businesses went bankrupt between 29 and 32(Wukovits, 18). The unemployment rate was nearly up to 25% in the 1930’s and did not drop back to 10% until the 1940’s. Not only did the unemployment ratio build but so did the amount of suicides throughout this time. The stock market affected everyone in the country due to the loss of money, jobs and homes. Homeless Americans then started to ride the rails. This was dangerous and when the railroads began to hire security that often started riots on the rails. Thousands of deaths were caused by jumping on and off train cars just to have somewhere to sleep. Americans all over could not pay for everyday things because they have lost so much money. â€Å"I knew the depression had really hit when the electric lights went out. My parents could no longer pay the one dollar electric bill† (ABC-CLIO). Prices of almost everything dropped hoping to fix the economies problems but with the salaries getting cut and jobs being lost the amount of income for most families could not even pay for basic life essentials. A winter coat was only twenty Boll 3 eight dollars, but people froze on the streets. A gas stove was nineteen ninety nine yet people all over America died of hunger due to the stock market crash and great depression. At only eight months in office the president of the United States during this crisis Herbert Hoover believed that the government should only play a small part in fixing the economy crisis. He tried to persuade the people and work force of America that the economy was perfectly fine and to keep living life as usual. He begged businesses not to lower their prices or cut down salaries and he also asked workers not to go on strike. Hoover firmly believed that government handouts would make the people of America weak. In Hoovers eyes handouts would not allow America to come together and fix this problem. â€Å"Herbert Hoover made massive public works programs to provide jobs for unemployed workers. He helped establish the federal farm board to assist farmers, the Federal Home Loan Bank Act to provide money for home purchases and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to provide financing for large businesses† (Wukovits, 19). All of Hoover’s ideas and plans to make the market rise again could only do so much. So many banks tried to raise their interest rates on loans to brokers to raise money and help the economy build again but the stock market was like a roller coaster when it went up it fell back down just as hard. â€Å"Many investors lost their life savings, and many businesses and banks failed due to their losses. One economist, Roger W. Babson, was the first to predict the crash he drew on evidence that consumers’ credit burdens were increasing, steel production was dropping, auto sales were falling, and some stocks were showing signs of price inflation. Other Boll 4 economists, like Irving Fisher, dismissed the markets downward trend as a shaking-out of speculators that would ultimately bring stability† (Galbraith). The stock market crash may have been one major cause of The Great Depression but it was also a major part in American history. The crash started the reform of laws and led to the establishment of the

Homosexual Couples Essay -- essays papers

Homosexual Couples Argument Essay We Can Do It, Why Can’t They? In the world now there are different kinds of partners: Black, White, Interracial, Straight, Gay, etc. But like many people, in the world, not everyone is accepted. Many people do not except Homosexuals for the reason that they are different from us. People would say that Homosexuals choose to live a â€Å"non normal† life. But they are people just like us. They have a heart just like we do, but they choose to put their heart towards their own sex. Society develops fears of homosexuality do to the belief that it disrupts the family, promotes pedophilia, child slavery, contributes to the moral decline of society and is a form of emotional illness (Grigg 85). This â€Å"homophobia† is a phenomenon of American culture (Cornett 140). It is my belief that society should learn to accept homosexuality and homosexual relationships. The September 14, 1992, issue of Newsweek published a poll revealing that most Americans still regard homosexuality as unacceptable (Grigg 80). By the most reliable estimate, Homosexuals account for about two to three percent of the population (Grigg 85). Before European contact most Native American societies viewed Homosexuals as important members of their communities (Tafoya 86). Significant minorities of men and women, one to five percent, are attracted exclusively to members of their own sex (LeVay and Hamor 121). Many gay people have responded to social pressures against homosexuality by â€Å"centering,† by discovering living according to their own values. An intense quest for identity, purpose and meaning often begins quite early, certainly by the time young homosexuals begin to appreciate the tremendous social pressures... ...am Norman. â€Å"Society should not tolerate homosexuality†. Discuss ways in which Ort tries to make sense of his existence

Throughout the novel, Ort indeed tries to make sense of his existence in many ways. It is also true to say that his relationship with Henry Warburton helps him with this discovery. Their relationship, although time-taking to discover, is beneficial towards Ort's understanding of his existence, and his character in particular is greatly benefited. Ort's quest to make sense of his existence is brought on by the car crash in which Sam, his father, is put into a coma. From this moment on, the whole family in fact tries to make sense of their existence, and Warburton is a useful influence towards the whole family in this sense, not just Ort. Before discussing the ways in which Warburton is useful influence in the process of identifying Ort's existence, it needs to seen in which ways he tries to make sense of his existence; After the car crash, which left the father, Sam, out of the picture for the family, Ort has been given the responsibility of the father figure. Of course, for this to happen to a twelve year old boy, it leaves him lost, and obviously misled towards what exactly has just happened. One important thing that Ort considers during this period of discovery is about his own form of religion, or some sort of deity like figure to look up to. It is seen by the audience that the only thing that Ort can look up to and get any help from is that newly formed deity figure apparent in the sky. He uses this deity in the sky to hopefully save him from non existence and subsequently help him discover his current existence. Henry Warburton is then brought into the discussion, as he has a positive effect on Ort's outlook on life, and existence. He helps Ort understand his place in life, and is almost the deity for Ort, providing assistance and support, and also helping with Ort's self discovery. Even Henry Warburton claims that he is a god, and that he has come to help Ort, promoting himself as a god like figure. Warburton provides the positive influence for Ort's discovery of his existence, as he provides help surrounding certain paths of life. Warburton has the ability to see and believe things that no one else in the family, including Ort, does, therefore providing assistance in Ort's self discovery. In many scenes throughout the novel, Henry Warburton's influential figure is scene, which brings support for Ort's understanding. He acts as a father like figure to Ort, even providing discipline to other members of the family on occasions, and supporting Ort's actions and ways of thinking. Despite these obvious ‘perks' on Warburton's behalf to help Ort's understanding, some less positive aspects about Warburton's influence are apparent, when deeper aspects of the novel are analysed. Warburton's character inevitably appears flawed to the family, through a number of faults such as the fact that he has a glass eye and a speech impediment. ‘Geez, he's got troubles'. Coinciding with this realisation by the family, Warburton decreases his rhetoric, and shows the audience that Ort has become quite dependant by this stage in the novel. Throughout the novel, Ort experiences things which would normally never be experienced by a boy that age. With all the crises he goes through, Henry Warburton, a strange but loving preacher who shows up on the doorstep, shows Ort the way to understanding, and self realisation, and is therefore a useful influence towards Ort's understandings.

Euthanasia Kantianism vs Utilitarianism - 1599 Words

The deliberate act of ending another s life, given his or her consent, is formally referred to as euthanasia. At present, euthanasia is one of the most controversial social-ethical issues that we face, in that it deals with a sensitive subject matter where there is much uncertainty as to what position one ought to take. Deliberately killing another person is presumed by most rational people as a fundamental evil act. However, when that person gives his or her consent to do so, this seems to give rise to an exceptional case. This can be illustrated in the most common case of euthanasia, where the person who is willing to die suffers from an illness that causes great pain, and will result in his or her demise in the not-so-distant future.†¦show more content†¦Therefore, since euthanasia meets the moral standards set by Utilitarianism, it would support the act of euthanasia as a morally sound action. Unlike Utilitarianism however, Kantianism states that ethics is a purely a priori discipline, thus, independent of experience, and that ethical rules can only be found through pure reason. Also contrary to Utilitarianism, Kantianism asserts that the moral worth of an action should be judged on its motive and the action itself, and not on its consequences. Based on these ideas, Kantianism propose that an action is good only if it performed out a good will ; which is the only thing that is good, in and of itself. To act out of a good will , one must act in accordance with a categorical imperative. According to Kant there is only one categorical imperative, which is to act only on that maxim in which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law (Kant, 528); and can also be formulated as act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as means, but always at the same time as an end (Kant, 53 2). Essentially, the categorical imperative states that your actions must not result in a practical contradiction, which can be determined by conceptualizing all other people performing the same act. To illustrate, if I were
